Getting to Bratislava and traveling around
From Vienna International Airport (VIE) to Bratislava
The fastest and most convenient way to get to Bratislava from Vienna Airport is by bus. Buses depart from the stop in front of Terminal 3 (departure hall) and typically cost between €8–15. The journey takes about 1 hour.
If you plan to visit Vienna city center, consider taking a train. However, there is no direct train connection from Vienna Airport to Bratislava—you’d need to transfer in Vienna.

Public Transport
Public transport is the most convenient way to get around Bratislava. You can find routes, timetables, and buy tickets via the official website:

Please note:
- Always make sure to have a valid ticket before entering any public transport vehicle. Ticket inspections are common, and fines are high.
- For ESSAI participants, zones 100 + 101 cover everything you need (city center and venue).
- Most trips, including to the venue, take under 15 minutes.
- Tickets are cheaper via the app, you can buy paper tickets too.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
You can use: Uber, Bolt or Hopin. Download the respective apps to order rides.
E-scooters and E-bikes
E-scooters and e-bikes are available in Bratislava. If you choose to rent one:
- Bring your own helmet
- Make sure you have travel/life insurance that covers such use
Getting to the ESSAI Venue
The ESSAI courses take place at:
- FIIT STU – Faculty of Informatics and Information Technologies, Slovak University of Technology, Ilkovicova 2.
From accommodation:
- Student Housing – SD Juraja Hronca, Bernolákova 1, Bratislava
- Hotel Akademik – Vazovova 1, Bratislava
(These are located close to each other; a 5-minute walk apart.)
Public Transport to FIIT STU
The faculty is about a 10-minute walk from these two main public transport stops:
- Botanická záhrada (Botanical Garden) – trip takes approx. 12 minutes.
Trams:- No. 9 (direction: Karlova Ves, Kútiky),
- No. 4 (direction: Pri Kríži).
- ZOO
Buses:- No. 39 (direction: Cintorín Slávičie,
- No. 31 (direction: Cintorín Slávičie).
Return Routes from Accommodation to FIIT STU
- From stop Blumentál (nearest stop to both Hotel Akademik and SD Juraja Hronca):
- Take Tram 9 to Botanická záhrada (direction: Karlova Ves, Kútiky); return via Tram 9 (direction: Ružinov, Astronomická)
- Or take Bus 31 or 39 to ZOO (direction: Cintorín Slávičie); return via:
- Bus 31 (direction: Blumentál)
- Bus 39 (direction: Súhvezdná, Ostredky)
- From stop Povraznícka:
- Take Bus 39 to ZOO; return via Bus 39 (direction: Blumentál)
- From stop Krížna:
- Take Tram 9 (direction: Kútiky) or Tram 4 (direction: Pri Kríži) to Botanická záhrada
- Return with Tram 9 (direction: Astronomická) or Tram 4 (direction: Zlaté Piesky)
From Bratislava Airport to City Center
Bratislava has a small international airport with good public transport connections to the city center. To get there, take Bus 61 to the main railway station, stop “Hlavná stanica”.
From “Hlavná stanica”, it’s about a 15-minute walk to Student Housing (SD Juraja Hronca) or Hotel Akademik.
Don’t forget to buy a ticket before boarding bus:
- From a ticket machine (and validate it in the yellow ticket validator inside the bus)
For this route, a 30-minute ticket (2 zones) is sufficient. The price is 1.20€, plus reduced fee or luggage fee if you have a bigger luggage 0.60€ (30-minute discounted ticket).
